It is not unusual to find stores in Las Vegas that have twenty or more watch brands under one roof and the strip is also home to the largest watch store in the world, selling almost a hundred different watch brands.

The selection of watches available in Las Vegas, is to be honest, staggering.

Just about any brand you can think of is available and also many others you may not of heard of before.

But the real beauty of the selection available is the opportunity to view time pieces you may not see anywhere local to where you live.

If you are interested in seeing watches that exceed half a million dollars and upwards it is very easy to find them on the strip.

You can, of course, also find watches at a more typical price point of anywhere from a few hundred dollars and upwards.

It is also a great place to find limited edition pieces that may be examples of only a few hundred pieces or less in existence.

A lot of limited pieces are sent to Vegas simply because they are very likely to be sold there due to the enormous amount of people passing through from all over the world on a daily basis.

It is also a fantastic place to pick up a good deal on pre-owned watches that have been traded in by visitors who put their old watch against the value of a new watch to enact a discount. Pre-owned watches of just about any brand or time period you can think of can be found in Las Vegas.

It is not uncommon to find pieces that were not for sale in America upon release but are traded in by tourists who are visiting from other countries.

If you are looking for a great deal on a hard to find pre-owned watch then Las Vegas is without doubt the place to visit.

- Christian Underhill

Seiko Watches

The Seiko watch company was formed in Japan in 1881; at that time under the name of K. Hattori. It began life as a clock repair company, and after eleven years of trading it produced its first wall clock. A few years later the company's first pocket watch was produced. The Seiko pocket watch was appointed in 1929 as Japan's National Railway official 'railway watch'. It was chosen because of its accuracy despite having to deal with the discomforts of train journeys.

Seiko watches have gone from strength to strength, as their focus is on high quality and affordable time pieces. Today the company is still owned by the same family who strive to attain the same high values placed on the corporation by K. Hattori. In 1953 Seiko were the first company to advertise on Japanese television. The advert was for Seiko alarm clocks, featuring a chicken winding up an alarm clock! They advertised their alarm clocks under their previous name of Seiko-sha meaning 'the house of precision'.

Seiko began by making all of their watches by hand. They utilised technology later in order to mechanise the manufacture of watches. Today Seiko uses machines to manufacture many of their watches, but they remain true to their roots and still have a high number of exceptionally skilled watchmakers that make some of their ranges by hand. In 1969 Seiko broke new ground in the watch industry, a move that is still setting the way for modern watch production. The Seiko Quartz Astron watch was the first quartz watch in the world. Quartz technology meant that watches could use a battery rather than being wound up and the time displayed was regulated by the electromagnetic properties of quartz. This revolutionary technology is the most common time keeping method in wrist watches today.

Seiko followed up the release of this technology by creating the worlds first six digit LCD quartz watch, and later by the introduction of the world's first multi-function digital watch. The list of Seiko world firsts is impressive. They have created a large number of epoch making watches that have completely revolutionized the watch industry. These developments include introducing the world's first TV watch, the first kinetic watch, (powered by the motion of the wearer), the first computerized divers watch, the first watch powered using thermo-electric methods (i.e. powered by the heat of the wearer) and many many more.

Seiko's impressive heritage has given their watches a global following and prominent place at the forefront of the watch industry. Seiko watches offer the best of precision technology at an affordable price. They are known for their strong commitment to furthering research and design and due to this they will remain a key brand in the watch world for the foreseeable future.

- Amy

Five Things to Check when Buying a Pocket Watch

Watches tell the time: something that is an integral part of each and everyone's day to day life. How you look at the time each day depends on what you are carrying on you. Many people like pocket watches instead of wearing them on their wrist. These types of watch are handy and stylish, especially when you want to wear them with formal clothing. For people who want to create a fashion statement, antique pocket watches look trendy. Nowadays pockets watches are not just meant for gentlemen: ladies love carrying them as well.

Antique pocket watches are usually made with metal outer covers and look extremely traditional. In fact many people not only like carrying pocket watches but also love collecting them as a hobby. People who are passionate about pocket watches are usually ready to pay any price for obtaining their collection of watches and putting them up on display. It is not very difficult to get hold of an antique pocket watch nowadays. These are available via many online shopping portals and they do offer great deals. But it is important to check a few things before you go for an antique pocket watch.

Firstly, see whether the watch that you are buying is really antique. There are many fraudsters around claiming that the watch they are selling is antique when in fact is has been manufactured recently. Fundamentally, an antique pocket watch is called antique in its true sense if only it dates back to 1890 and before. This is the period when antique watches were really introduced. So beware, check inside for the date, and start asking more questions if something seems a little fishy...

Secondly, check the price against the product that you are being offered. If it really dates back to the seventeenth century then the price should be more than a modern day pocket watch! Also, older antique pocket watches might also feature jewels, which would also make them more expensive. In such cases, the price would be more dependent on the quality of the jewels and make of the watch itself. Many antique pocket watches are also made of silver or gold rather than other metals like copper. Antique pocket watches are family treasures and get passed on from generation to generation.

Thirdly, check out the working condition. It should be ticking and the hands should be aligned properly. If it is really antique, there is unlikely to be any manufacturing defect, but you still do a check just in case.

Fourthly, check the glass used. Sometimes if watches are really old then the glasses break and are replaced by other glasses which might not be of superior quality. Check for scratches and minor cracks.

Fifthly and finally, check if the pocket watch is being sold with a case. For obvious reasons, prices will differ according to the quality and make of the case.
